Ingredients
  

Cake:

  • 2 cups 240g all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp ground cloves
  • ½ cup 115g unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 cup 200g brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 1 ½ cups 360g unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup 60g chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • ½ cup 75g raisins or dried cranberries (optional)

Cream Cheese Frosting (optional):

  • 8 oz 225g cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup 115g unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 –3 cups 240–360g powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions
 

Prep Pan and Oven

  • I preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). I grease a 9x13-inch baking pan and line with parchment paper or lightly flour for easy removal of this apple cake.

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, I whisk 2 cups flour, 1 ½ tsp baking soda, ½ tsp baking powder, ½ tsp salt, 1 ½ tsp cinnamon, ½ tsp nutmeg, and ¼ tsp cloves until evenly combined for this moist Applesauce Cake.

Add Wet Ingredients

  • I add ½ cup melted butter, 1 cup brown sugar, 2 eggs, 1 ½ cups applesauce, and 1 tsp vanilla to the dry ingredients. I stir with a spatula until smooth, avoiding overmixing to keep this apple cake tender.

Fold in Add-Ins

  • If using, I gently fold in ½ cup walnuts and ½ cup raisins for added texture in this moist applesauce cake.

Bake Cake

  • I beat 8 oz cream cheese and ½ cup butter until fluffy. I add 1 tsp vanilla, a pinch of salt, and 2–3 cups powdered sugar gradually, beating until smooth for this apple cake.
